AFTER A LONG SPELL ON THE LEASH IT SEEMS THIS DOG CAN RUN FREE FOR A WHILE, AND SNIFF OUT FRESH LEADS. The bird has been caged for more than two years now, biding its time, but pretty soon the door of his cage will slide open, offering him the chance to escape... and hopefully to sing. Curfew is over, and the cat finally can be let out to prowl. And as the old saying goes: when the cat's away, the mice sure do play. For some five to six hours a day at least, in the evening, which is of course optimal bar hopping time, for bar mice like me. In the torrid, florrid, crazy city of Ho Chi Minh, in the middle of dry season (winter.) Which apparently is the best time to be here. Where to go? so many options, so many opportunities. Like a muscle, freedom can go limp from lack of exercise. I figure I should get to know Ho Chi Minh City the same way I got to know Tokyo -- by walking. I will just choose one direction and start walking, stopping off for a tiffle or a spot of socialization whenever I find something appetitizing. When time's up I can just jump into a taxi back to the hotel.
It has taken a long time for Nga to trust me enough with the keys of the city (even though I was getting around the place just fine by myself way back in the mid 1990s, when she was just in middle school. Way up in the midlands somewhere.) I admit it can be tough for foreigners at first here, and my first night in Vietnam in 1995, I was so scared I literally locked myself in my room all night long. But that was 15 years ago, and I have matured a lot as well. Ho Chi Minh City has too. And when she finally presented me with them, I was like:
Thank you, because it gives me the chance to blow off some steam. Thank you, because the only way you can get to know a city, is to walk yourself around it, drink yourself around it, stagger home by yourself around it, early in the morning when you have only the cyclo drivers to keep you company, them and the little girls selling flowers.
I can picture steamy nights drinking cold beer at home and listening to all the latest house, reggae, hip-hop and Drum'N'Bass streaming out of Bangkok (on the other side of Cambodia) courtesy of DJ Amnesty's UB Radio...
Drinking in Ho Chi Minh City, even at the swankiest establishments, is always a good deal... of course the best deal is to be found at drinking at home. Seeing as though I mastered that in Japan, I am not that...

THIS HAS BEEN CALLED THE KHAO SAN ROAD OF VIET NAM, BUT IT IS DIFFERENT AS MUCH AS IT IS SIMILAR. Whereas the Thai backpacker heartland of Banglamphu is named Thai-style after natural features (some kind of plum trees if I remember correctly), Phạm Ngũ Lo is named after a patriot. A very Vietnamese touch.

ALLEZ BOO: Demolished/Rebuilt (in a former Lotteria burger joint on the corner of Pham Ngu Lao St and De Tham St).
This is the place where I met my girl Nga and it has been a landmark in the city. It used to be on a prominent corner on Pham Ngu Lao St and De Tham St, opposite a Lotteria at one stage. Then it was demolished, and it disappeared for a year or two (right when Nga and I started getting it on.) It felt sad to lose that part of our life (not that Nga seemed to care that much.) Strangely, sometime in 2009 during my Reality Bites episode, Allez Boo reappeared... on the opposite side of the street it used to occupy! This is where the Lotteria once stood, and as a photo I have from 1995 confirms, used to be the site of an oldstyle simple Vietnamese cafe. How times change! The long bar is back although the pool table isn't in evidence on the first floor, according to a poster on Saigon Nezumi. Given that this was the place where I met my girlfriend Nga, this place is always going to have special resonance with me. Although, strangely, it doesn't seem to have much resonance with Nga. She's not as sentimental as I am...
This could well have been the first bar I ever visited in Ho Chi Minh City (I am assuming it was the bar I visited on the river one humid night with A. Telfer back at the end of 1996, they were playing MC Hammer on the decks.) Later, way past midnight, we got a team cyclo ride home through the rotten yellow streets, back to our hotel... no, scrub that, Apocalypse Now! has never been on water. I must be thinking of some other place (perhaps the bar on the old Australian boat?) So, it seems I have never been to Apocalypse Now, which might well be a good thing. Apparently the place, named after the famous phim, is run by a Vietnamese-American. It costs some 150,000 Dong just to get in the door, which presumably puts off many Vietnamese.

January 5, 2010: I want to have a beer here this afternoon to ponder my collapsing financial situation but mostly because I heard this is an expat hangout just down the road from my hotel. Given that I have only 100,000 to 200,000 Dong to spend on myself for the next five/six days, this could be a mistake. However, Vietnam is one place where it is easy to GO OUT and SAVE MONEY, and that is one reason I like it. In the verdant park across the busy intersection from the Long Phi, New Year beers are currently going for 20,000 Dong a can. Those beers with names like Germania (evidently the name for Hitler's capital which never was, according to the TV I watched last night!) The campaigns are where the really cheap bargains can be had in Ho Chi Minh City and the other night in the verdant park (which was just a wall when I first visited this place in 1995) I came across a stand foaming out two plastic cups of some new beer for only 15,000 Dong. This is the stand to head when I start to get really low on cash, in the next couple of nights...
Anyway, what I found, on my mid to late afternoon visit (unofrtunately I rocked in just before Happy Hour (5pm to 9pm)): Beer is cold which is more than can be said for some other nearby establishments. Faded tropical elegance inside includes a stairway to nowhere.Drinks menu boasts that personal Indochinese favorite Red Bull and vodka for 35 000 Dong...

This may or may not have been the bar I ended up at the end of my last trip to Vietnam, in June/July 2009 (codenamed Freedom Lies on the Margins of the Page) -- I had a horrid fight with Nga on the exterior, and for a moment or two, I thought our relationship might have been over. I had been playing by her rules for weeks, when we were out on the dunes at Mui Ne, only drinking one can of beer a day -- she had even stopped me from drinking Pepsi-Cola and Red Bull, in the interests of health. In the end I resorted to sneaking out in the oppressive midlunch sun to guzzle sandwiches and soda water at the Malibu Resort beachside restaurant, an oasis of flies, under the excuse that I was taking a swim. While she was watching the midlunch soaps. Once on one of these clandestines I got lost walking along the beach and took a wrong turn loping through the dunes and ended up passing into some village (apparently the original Mui Ne fishing village) where everyone wanted to shake my hand!

Right in the heart of the backpacker district, this establishment seems to be a joint venture by Go-2 and Allez Booz. There is a bar on the ground floor, disco on the first floor, hip-hop zone on the second floor, and a barbeque grill on the third. The urinals are pretty cool too you can pee on all the overpaid fashion models and celebs from FTV. Believe it or not, there are actually people in America called Crazy Buffalo (usually they're Indians). This club, with its distinctive facade, rises diagonally opposite the 999 convenience store, where I like to buy my take-outs.
Down on the first floor, Crazy Buffalo serves up one of my favorite dishes in the whole world, and that is spaghetti carbonara. It is not quite as good as good as the carbonara at ef gallery in Asakusa, Tokyo, Japan, but it is still not too bad. Especially after weeks of munching rice.

Supposed to be a place for middleaged Western men to manhanlde young Vietnamese hotties, but this bar does have it charms. Currently Happy Hour is held every day between 10am to 6pm everyday, with Tiger beer draughtable for 20 000 Dong a mug. That's about a dollar a beer, which confirms that Vietnam is still great value when it comes to boozing. Wifi free. Darts and pool table upstairs.
EDEN CAFE: Pham Ngu Lao.
Supposedly a gay bar (although the men pictured above are probably not gay!) I have seen actual gay couples here too. And on a Thursday night a whole team of young Egnlish folk, many of them curlyhaired, dancing to 1990s house music.

Hasn't changed since I popped in for a beer in early 2007. Communist propaganda on the walls, pop music and capitalist sports on TV. This could almost be classified a sports bar although the sports broadcast here includes kickboxing from Thailand. I don't know if they screen Vietnamese cock fighting as well but it would make for an interesting beer...
Windows Cafe. Near the Reunification Palace. This is a pen for Vietnam's fashion slaves and seems to be THE place to be seen. Pretentious atmosphere, good menu, always packed.
The New Look Fund should address my lack of business related attire. LetLs get something I can wear at Clestra... but also at Windows in HCMC. But letLs do plenty of research before making a purchase... and learn to be a good shopper.

I have been meaning to get back to this place for more than two years now. But perhaps I shouldn't bother -- and perhaps, neither should you.
Hard Rock Cafe: Kumho Plaza.
Complete with its ANZ Bank and Korean flag hung from the flagpoles, the Kumho Plaza is almost complete and still in pristine condition. One of the jewels of its crown is the Hard Rock Cafe, which has opened on its ground floor. I was recently in the so-called park fronting on Phạm Ngũ Lo Street for the start-of-year festivities and at the big stage at one end, there was a hard rock band from North America performing.
According to Bloomberg Press, Hard Rock International plans to open 12 cafes in "emerging markets", after having pretty much achieved its objectives in the "emerged". One of the new cafes will be in Ho Chi Minh City (another will be opened in Phuket, Thailand). Venues in China and other Asian countries will mix western rock music with local musicians' work. I know that there is a thriving rock scene in Ho Chi Minh City, and look forward to the day I can hear the Vietnamese sound played in Hard Rock Cafe.
Le Pub: Phạm Ngũ Lo backstreets.
In a part of the city dominated by sleaziness and in-your-face commerce (from the shove something into your face and demand you buy it school of retail), Le Pub is a refeshing change. Unlike the nearby Cyclo Bar a short walk away, this place attracts Western females. That is always a plus... and a sign that it is not too dodge.
