AUGUST 20 2003

Some of the first real Icelanders I saw, wandering the streets of Reykjavik on a cold and blustery summer's day. I was struck by their cold Teutonic foreignness, so in keeping with the cold foreignness of the strange country I had just arrived in.   August 20 2003, 10.43 PM, in my house in Iriya, Tokyo, Japan -- the subject is me!   Entry into Iceland airspace and greeted by a nature spirit (or so I imagined at the time!), this is the vista of the south coast.
One of the grooviest cafes I have ever seen, in Reykjavik, Iceland. I had heard all about the Iceland nightlife scene, and while I had no money to go out, I could at least sit around this cafe listening to David Bowie and drinking Japanese green tea, and imagining how cool it would be to live here.   An historic house in Reykjavik -- it was the scene of a famous summit between Presidents Gorbachev and Ronald Reagan in the 1980s, which helped resolve the Cold War.
