SOUTHERN California it is not, but many foreigners find this beach town a welcome respite from big city Japan. The palms are a nice touch, even in the middle of winter, with its blue skies and harsh Siberian winds. I know a lot of guys, Australian guys like myself who choose to live in this part of Japan, just to be close to the surf. They are surfers of course, and whenever a typhoon is hovering offshore, these guys are in second heaven. They don't even bother turning in to work. There was no typhoon around the day I chose to visit, this being the dead dry heart of winter. There were plenty of surfers out in force, all of them Japanese, and I was feeling so glad I wasn't at work, free from all that work pressure. Happy to make a temporary living just from Google Adsense. Took the subway to Moto-Yawata, then JR'ed it with my Seishun Juhachi Kippu to Chiba, where I transferred to what must be one of the most scenic rides close to Tokyo: the O[(Sotobosen, "Outer Shore Line"), which in a strange kind of way reminded me of riding the rails across the Blue Mountains near Sydney, Australia, when I was a student in Bathurst. Maybe it was because of all of those tunnels, the creaking old train, the constant continual suprising outbursts of nature...
