CHANDAN |
Juhu(Dolby Digital DTS)
Writes Mindless Mumbai: "We went to chandan today, to watch a movie. chandan is amongst the few single-screen cinema halls left in this part of mumbai. everywhere, single-screen halls are being redeveloped into multiplexes with malls, food courts et all. while they do provide more comforts and choices, it all comes at a very hefty ticket; and nothing beats chandan's prices for budgeted college students. also for some reason i feel each single-screen cinema hall has an identity of its own, while the multiplexes simply look like clones of each other, with jazzy forms made of glass, steel and colourful polycarbonate..."

CINEMAX |
Goregaon(Dolby Digital DTS) This cinema has historical significance -- it is the home of the Cinemax empire which has taken India by storm. According to one website I have read: "Cinemax is actually the single screen cinema in Goregaon with which the Kanakias first started their cinema revolution in India in 1997. Now all of the single screen theatres and multiplexes across India by the Kanakia Group will be recognised by the Cinemax brand name...
The cinemas already operational from the Cinemax stable comprise of the erstwhile Cinemagic Andheri; Cinestar, Kandivali; Cineplanet, Sion; Cine-wonder, Thane; Cineprime, Mira Road; Cinemax, Goregaon; Cinemax, Nashik.
Cinemax, Goregaon was the first to open, installed with Christie projection and the state-of-the-art digital sound. The theatre also claims to have int-roduced the concept of reverse slope in the stalls, which helps patrons to enjoy the film comfortably. `Minimax¨, a mini screen consisting of 49 seats with very good interiors is also something that Cinemax, Goregaon boasts of."
Over at Andheri, luxury seating options are taking viewer comforts to amazing heights. Here is a brief report condensed from Screen India Online (click the aforementioned Screen India link to read the complete and compelling story). The story quotes Cinemax director, Hiral Kanakia:
"Everyone's talking about the Red Lounge at the newly-opened Cinemax theatre at Andheri's Infiniti Mall with its personalised service and recliner sofas. There's no doubt that this new concept will be a big hit with corporate houses for special previews but how viable will it be for the common viewer?
"Today, people don't think twice about spending Rs 160-180 on a film ticket so why should they grouse about pooling in a little extra if they're promised a more comfortable viewing? Even before our new theatre opened around 12-1,800 people had visited the theatre and gone away savoring the experience. Even those who didn't venture beyond the foyer or just stepped into the auditorium without actually watching a film there, admitted that they were prepared to shell out as much as Rs 500 for a different comfort zone. The innovatively styled displays and in-step lighting added to the appeal. I can promise you that it'll be very affordable experience at Mumbai's biggest multiplex today and for the first time in the city we're offering a choice of gold and silver screens at the Red Lounge. The gold screen has recliner sofas while the silver screen has a combo of sitting sofas and regular seats. We'll also be bringing orders to the seats and Red Lounge viewers will have more variety to choose from apart from the regular items in the foyer menu.
"Will the Red Lounge give Cinemax an edge over neighbouring theatres like Fame and Fun?
It's definitely our primary attraction but we have other aces up our sleeve including a loyalty programme, LCD screens and a huge foyer where people can spend some time before going in."
Currently showing at Cinemax at Andheri are the movies 36 China Town (starring Akshaye Khanna and Shahid Kapoor), Hanuman (with Mukesh Khanna as the voice of Hanuman), and The Pink Panther.

DRIVE-IN |
Bandra This drive-in is situated in what many pundits describe as the new business and financial center of Mumbai. Not The Center mind you, but "a center", the secondary business and financial center of Mumbai. It is situated not far from the new Bandra-Kurla Complex, one of the hottest developments in the city. As Gayatri Ramanathan reported: "In the years to come, the Bandra-Kurla Complex will be world class," says T Chandrashekhar, additional commissioner, Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority, the bureaucrat who has been entrusted with turning the area into the city's financial nerve centre. The wide windows of Chandrashekhar's office offer a panoramic view of the entire 130-hectare complex.
"In the foreground are the slums, a reminder of times when the area was the dumping ground of Kurla's industrial sprawl; in the background are the majestic glass and steel structures of companies that have bet on the area - ICICI, Citibank, State Bank of India, IL & FS, Bank of Baroda, Securities Exchange Board of India, Reserve Bank of India - quite literally the who's who of Indian financial markets.
"The 4,000 families living in the slums will be gone in a year's time, promises Chandrashekhar, who's chalked out an ambitious Rs 3,000 crore (Rs 30 billion) plan to rehabilitate the slum dwellers elsewhere. The area will be home to swanky international-standard office complexes, five five-star hotels, hospitals, a convention centre, mini golf courses and a drive-in theatre with an entertainment complex."

EROS
|
Eros Building, 42 M.Karve Road
Opp. Churchgate Station, Churchgate
Mumbai - 400020..
As the Mumbai Films and Theatre Travel Guide has reported: "Shorabji Bhedwar designed this beautiful Art Deco building marking the beginning of Back Bay reclamation in early 1938. Interesting murals, housing shops and other businesses along with a cinema provides an interesting outing to this place. It is an excellent example of modern urban design.
"The foundation of Eros Cinema was laid in 1935. This grand luxury cinema opened in 1938 thus establishing its presence at the pivotal urban junction where it is situated. The construction of this building on the then newly reclaimed Backbay plot housing shops and other businesses, apart from the cinema, took about two and a half years to complete. Partially faced with red Agra sandstone, this building is painted cream -- the combination making the building look taller. The two wings of this Art Deco building meet up in a central block. The foyer is in white and black marble with touches of gold. Marble staircases with chromium handrails lead up to the upper floor. The murals are in muted colours depicting Indian architectures."

GURU KRIPA |
SION This isn't a movie house of course but a major supplier of all those samosa snacks consumed in Mumbai cinemas. If you want to experience how Bollywood cinema tastes, head to this place. Says Metroblogging Mumbai: "This eatery located just off Sion circle has become a tourist attraction of sorts. Every morning over 30,000 samosas are made at this virtual samosa factory and dispersed all over the city for consumption. Guru Kripa is said to produce 1/3rd of Mumbai's samosas available in cinema halls/multiplexes, college canteens, etc.
To get here just hop on a train to Sion (central line) and then ask anybody for GuruKripa."

None other than LV Prasad worked here before becoming one of the legends of Indian life -- and even appearing on stamps. As the story goes, LV arrived in Bombay with an ambition to be in films and just Rs. 100 in his pocket. He was did not know Hindi or English. He struggled in Bombay for two years working at places like this, before his first break finally came. |

METRO |
(Dolby Digital DTS)
As Asia Rooms reports: "The Metro Cinema is located at Metro House, M.G Road at Churchgate in Mumbai. It is an interesting landmark in Mumbai opened in 1938 for screening only English Movies. For a long time, Metro Cinema was screening movies from the house of MGM. The Metro Cinema was on lease for almost 999 years at a rent of Re 1 per year.
"An architect named Thomas W. Lamb of New York and an Indian architect namely D. W Ditchburn of Bombay designed the Metro Cinema. Metro has been holding many star-studded premiers of many Hindi and English movies.
"The interior, floors, walls, ceilings and furniture of Metro Cinema was all in shades of red and pink. Students of the J. J. School of Arts under the director Charles Gerard execute the marble foyer and staircases of the theater.
"Metro Cinema offers a whole new experience of watching movies in a royal and most comfortable manner. It is one of the entertainment destinations that everyone looks forward to visit."
