South Korea - Suwon [May 2003]
South of Seoul in South Korea, in the dormitory city of Suwon, stretches this majestic walled structure. Decked with flags and surrounded by the rolling hills and drab apartment towers peculiar to continental Asia, the wall takes sevral hours to circumscribe. I'm not the first to describe Korea as an undiscovered gem on the Asian traveller's circuit, and boasts many memorable sights. In some ways, it is an intriquing mix of Chinese and Japanese aesthetics -- although it could be argued that Japanese culture can be traced back to Korea. The Korean language, for example, seems to be a combination of Chinese style vocabulary and Japanese grammar. The food is also superb -- and many people travel to Korea just to eat.
