Phrasal Verbs

PHRASAL VERBS ARE A COMMON AND IMPORTANT aspect of the English language. They are expressions that consist of a verb followed by one or more particles, usually prepositions or adverbs. The meaning of a phrasal verb often cannot be deduced from the meanings of its individual parts, making them a bit tricky for non-native speakers to grasp.

The particle in a phrasal verb can change the verb's original meaning or add a different nuance to it. Phrasal verbs are used in various contexts, including casual conversations, formal writing, and literature. They are an integral part of English communication and can significantly impact the clarity and precision of your language.

Note that one phrasal verb may itself have more than one meaning ("blow up" can mean "explode", or to blow air into a balloon.) Therefore, context is important for understanding.

Separable and Non-Separable Phrasal Verbs

THERE ARE two main types of phrasal verbs: separable and inseparable.

Separable phrasal verbs allow the verb and particle(s) to be separated by the object, while inseparable phrasal verbs require the verb and particle(s) to remain together regardless of the object's position. For example:

I turn the light on (Separable)
I turned off the light (Separable)
Cyprus has entered into negotiations about joining the trading block (Inseparable)

She picked the book up. (The object "book" is between the verb "picked" and the particle "up.")

1. “Tap into”: I think you asked me the meaning of this phrasal verb. It means “to exploit or manage in a good way.” Trump wants to tap into public anger about job losses and a recession.

d, “Cyprus has completely restricted any movements of people. It was entered from 6 days ago.” You should have used “entered into” instead of “entered”. “Enter into” means something was started (for example, parties can enter into negotiations or a settlement.) It is another phrasal verb!
