Beijing Food
BEIJING IS UNDERSTANDABLY FAMOUS FOR ITS PEKING DUCK (北京烤鸭), BUT THERE IS MUCH MORE TO THE CAPITAL'S CULINARY SCENE THAN THIS ONE DISH. Lamb kebabs (羊肉串) are also popular, as are Zhajiangmian noodles (炸江面) which I used to eat occasionally at Bamiyan, while I was living in Japan.
Personally I don't dig on the Zhajiangmian noodles so much but I love lamb kebabs whenever I can find them. While I was in transit at Beijing's Capital Airport in 2010 I enjoyed a bowl of beef and radish at Flavor Tang, with rice and beer. It was my first and only Beijing meal, if not very authentic.
Some other popular Beijing treats include jiaozi (饺子), boiled or steamed dumplings filled with a variety of ingredients, such as ground meat, vegetables, or seafood. They are a popular snack in Beijing and can be found at many street stalls and markets.
Baozi (包子) are steamed buns filled with meat or vegetables. They are a common street food in Beijing and can be found at many markets and food stalls.
SICHUANESE FOOD IN BEIJING
FROM WHAT I have heard, Sichuanese food is big in Beijing these days. More than once my students on iTalki have complained of having a stomach ache the night after indulging in some fiery hotpot action.
OpenAI explains: "There are several reasons why Sichuanese cuisine is popular in China and beyond. One reason is that it is known for its bold and complex flavors, which are achieved through the use of a variety of seasonings and spices, such as Sichuan peppercorns, chili peppers, and garlic. These flavors are often balanced with sour and sweet tastes, creating a unique and satisfying taste experience."
